5th GRADE WRITING GOALS AND CONTENT
In fifth grade, the writing curriculum is integrated into an overall language arts curriculum consisting of writing, reading, speaking, listening, and drama. The focus of the fifth grade language arts curriculum is” the writing and reading connection” with an emphasis on the study of literature. Also see the 5th grade reading curriculum.
Goals for the 5th Grade Writing Program: We want children to…
- expand the connection between reading and writing.
- demonstrate understanding through a variety of written forms.
- master vocabulary words and spelling conventions.
- expand use of a variety of sentences.
- master paragraph development (topic sentences and supporting details).
- develop paragraph organization.
- further develop research and writing skills (use of appropriate sources, outline, summary, bibliography).
5th Grade Writing Content
Writing is a skill, not a subject area. However, there are several skills that also serve as topics around which the 5th grade writing curriculum is organized:
- reading response (written response to questions about literature)
- author’s style and voice
- literary devices to deepen writing
- response to novels
- writing across curriculum (theme, geography, etc.)
- writing to demonstrate understanding
- individualized spelling lists based on an individual’s misspelled written words
- writing process
K-5 MATH GOALS AND CONTENT
Overarching K-5 Math Goals: We want our students to…
- develop logical/rational reasoning.
- expand divergent thinking through problem-solving.
- develop mental math skills.
- acquire a variety of strategies when solving problems.
- articulate/explain/write how a problem was solved.
- understand, meaning to apply skills and knowledge to new and unfamiliar problems.
- instill confidence in individual potential and ability in math.
- develop deep thinking of math concepts.
Note: K-5 teachers use the Everyday Math Series from University of Chicago and other materials for their program.
