State College Friends School was once a dream. It was a dream about a place where children could learn in a warm, nurturing space filled with light and close to nature . . . a place where the Quaker testimonies of Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality, and Stewardship could be seen and felt throughout the curriculum, the rhythm of the day, and in the way of teachers and staff. In 1980 that dream became a reality, through the loving support of thoughtful, creative individuals who believed that the best education is a child-centered education.
Today, State College Friends School is a dream come true for families who want a school that feels safe, nurturing, welcoming, and full of opportunity for their children. As a small independent school, Friends School is a place where children discover that their unique individuality is cherished and celebrated. Our teachers and staff help students to develop trust, confidence, and feelings of acceptance and belonging. As this happens, learning becomes exciting, deep, rich, and even fun! Parents call it magic. Students call it awesome!
Like all independent schools, Friends School is tuition-based. And, like most independent schools, we must supplement tuition with fundraising. The most important source of fundraising is the Annual Fund. Every year, following the lead of our Board of Trustees, we ask all families to contribute what they can to the Annual Fund.
This can be done with a one-time contribution or a pledge to be fulfilled by June 30th. Every single gift makes a difference, both in helping to cover the actual costs of offering such a unique program, as well as in demonstrating our collective commitment to Quaker education. As we seek grants and contributions from others, we make a powerful statement of commitment when we are able to report 100% participation from those closest to the school - the parents of our students. When you make a decision to contribute to State College Friends School, you become part of the school's founding vision and mission: To provide an academically vigorous education in a nurturing environment that inspires a love of learning and prepares students to meet challenges with confidence and compassion.
The value of a Friends School education is easy to feel, difficult to describe, challenging to quantify, and not easy to duplicate. It is best illustrated in the passionate way alumni speak of the values learned in the school and in the way they live those values. It is illustrated in the way Friends School students enter high school with confidence in their abilities and a readiness to grow into new opportunities. It is illustrated in the way school families bond with each other through the school’s activities and fundraisers and share in the joys and struggles of parenting. It is illustrated by the way Friends School students leave the school with the belief that they can make a difference in the world.
Through the Annual Fund, faculty and staff are supported with the materials and resources they need to meet the needs of students, curricula are enhanced with meaningful field trips and offerings both in and outside of school, our building and grounds are well-maintained, and tuition assistance is made available to ensure a diverse student body.
