Students as Stewards of the Earth

Every year, students at State College Friends School  celebrate Earth Day in many ways.  Typically on the days leading up to this spring event,  teachers and students are reading stories,  learning songs, and sharing in discussions about the Quaker testimony of stewardship and how it relates to our Earth Day activities.

This year, on the Friday before Earth Day, students will board buses at school early in the morning and  travel to Bald Eagle State Park where they will participate in a number of activities including park and waterway clean up, building bluebird houses, planting saplings, and hearing from the park rangers about conservation and care of the land.

On Saturday, April 22nd - Earth Day - our neighbors from Foxdale Village, along with friends from the community will gather at Friends School for a morning of celebration and education. This is a free event where all are welcome to participate in singing and dancing, painting and storytelling, culminating in a stroll down a make-your-own trail mix path.  Details for the Saturday event are shown at left.

The event from 10:00 a.m. until noon is designed as a whole progression for those who can attend the entire time, although drop-ins are always welcomed. For those who wish to stay on for a picnic lunch (outdoors) until 1:00 p.m.,  there will be several additional activities offered such as letter writing to state and federal representatives -- urging support of earth-friendly initiatives -- and seed planting.
