Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Work

Learning about and living into the equity testimony is a year-round experience at State College Friends School, but each January the school community takes extra time to focus on past and present efforts towards racial justice. SCFS celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day throughout the week of January 16th. The whole school gathered for a special Meeting for Worship and sang songs of peace and justice. Friends in 2nd through 8th grade prepared dance performances to share with the community. In the afternoon, our Pre-K friends participated in a Peace Train march around our campus while kindergarteners and first graders marched with signs to our neighbors at Foxdale Village.

Students spent the weeks leading up to these activities learning about the history of the American Civil Rights Movement, the work still left to be done, and the ways in which each of us can speak up for what we believe in and make positive changes in the world. As friends prepared to honor the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., each class reflected on the theme, "The Time is Always Right" and created artwork that was on display throughout the school alongside community artwork that was collected by the Art Alliance. The gallery was open to the community on Sunday, January 15th  and Saturday, January 21st. SCFS was honored to have WTAJ feature the students' creations. Click here to see the news story.
