Last week, the K/1 community celebrated the 100th day of school with a visit to 8 centenarians at Foxdale Village retirement home. This visit was an incredible opportunity for students to learn from the wisdom and life experiences of those who had lived for a century.
During the visit, the students shared their excitement about reaching the 100th day of school and asked questions like: “What are your happiest memories?” “What is it like having so much living experience?” “What is the story of your biggest adventure?” “How do you like being one hundred years old or older?”
Students listened to stories of a 99 year old repelling from a building, of flying in a sailplane and taking a ship home from Europe after fighting in WWII, and of going to school in a one-room schoolhouse with eight grades where they got the school water from a spring in a creek. One centenarian shared that living so long is like living multiple lives. Residents at Foxdale Village were delighted by the energy and enthusiasm of the students.
The 100th day celebration visit was a beautiful reminder of how meaningful intergenerational relationships can be. It highlighted the value of listening to others' stories and showcased how much can be learned from those who have lived through so much history.
