This year, our middle school students did not just learn about civic engagement. They stepped into it.
Through a year-long, student driven Changemakers Project, Middle School students at State College Friends School identified real issues they care about in their school, community, and beyond. They asked hard questions. They researched credible sources. They looked at who is affected and who has the power to create change. Then they designed meaningful action steps to raise awareness and invite thoughtful conversation.
The goal was never to “fix” complex problems. The goal was to practice being informed, responsible participants in a community.
From healthcare access to pedestrian safety, from workplace equity to local policy proposals, our students are now in the action phase of their projects. They are sharing websites, letters, posters, surveys, and campaigns with real audiences beyond the classroom.
Over the next several weeks, we will be highlighting their work here on social media and on our website.. We invite YOU to engage with their research, explore their ideas, and support their efforts to make a difference.
This is student voice in action. This is civic learning at work. This is what it looks like when young people practice being changemakers.
