Student Changemaker Advocates for Fair Wages in the Community

At SCFS, the Middle School Changemakers Project encourages students to engage with real-world issues through research, reflection, and action. Ezra, one of this year’s Changemakers, focused his project on a concern close to home: fair wages for workers in his local community.

After researching wage data and learning more about the experiences of janitorial staff, Ezra developed a deeper understanding of how compensation impacts workers and their families. He examined both the economic realities and the human side of the issue, considering how wages affect daily life and long-term stability.

As a result of his research, Ezra wrote a formal proposal to Delta High School recommending an increase in hourly wages for janitorial staff from $18.47 to $20. His proposal outlines the reasons behind this recommendation and presents his ideas in a clear, respectful, and well-supported manner.

Ezra’s project is a strong example of what civic engagement can look like at the local level. By identifying a concern, gathering information, and communicating thoughtfully with decision makers, he demonstrates how students can participate meaningfully in their communities.

As part of his project, Ezra is also gathering input from the community. We invite you to share your perspective by completing his survey.

We are proud of Ezra’s careful research and his willingness to advocate for others. His work reflects the core goals of the Changemakers Project, encouraging students to think critically, act responsibly, and contribute to conversations that matter.
