Student Changemaker Advocates for Safer Streets in State College

Through the Middle School Changemakers Project at SCFS, students are learning how to turn research into meaningful action. Charlotte, one of this year’s Changemakers, focused her project on pedestrian safety in State College.

While researching local data, Charlotte noticed a pattern. Pedestrian accidents were more likely to occur in areas with poor lighting, especially at night. She identified a specific location of concern along Westerly Parkway near Welsh Pool and the High School, where a pedestrian and bike crossing is not well lit.

Motivated to improve safety in her community, Charlotte developed a plan to advocate for the installation of a streetlight at this crossing. Her project combines research with action by building community awareness and gathering support to present to the Public Works Department.

Charlotte’s work highlights how local change often begins with careful observation and a willingness to take initiative. By focusing on a specific and actionable goal, she demonstrates how students can contribute to safer, more responsive communities.

As part of her campaign, Charlotte is collecting signatures to show community interest in this improvement. We invite you to support her efforts by completing the form. Names and addresses are optional and will only be used to demonstrate community support.
