Student Changemaker Raises Awareness About PFAS and Community Health

As part of the Middle School Changemakers Project at SCFS, students are exploring complex issues through research, reflection, and action. One student chose to focus on PFAS, a group of human-made chemicals found in many everyday products that have raised concerns due to their impact on human health and the environment.

Through research and analysis, the student examined how PFAS can enter water systems and persist over time, as well as the potential health risks associated with exposure. This work led to a deeper understanding of how environmental issues can affect communities at both local and national levels.

To raise awareness, the student submitted an article to the Centre County Gazette that outlines key information about PFAS and steps individuals can take to reduce exposure. In addition, they created an email template to help community members contact decision makers and advocate for stronger protections and increased awareness.

This project reflects the goals of the Changemakers initiative by encouraging informed inquiry and meaningful civic participation. By connecting scientific research with public communication, the student demonstrates how young people can contribute to important conversations about health and environmental responsibility.

We invite you to read the published article to learn more about PFAS and consider taking action using the provided email template.
