At SCFS, middle school students are engaging with real-world challenges through the Changemakers Project, a year-long initiative centered on research, civic engagement, and meaningful action. Sorijah, one of this year’s Changemakers, chose to focus on the issue of affordable healthcare.
After researching the rising cost of medical care in the United States, Sorijah learned that many individuals and families delay or avoid seeking treatment due to financial barriers. Recognizing the impact this can have on people’s health and well-being, she set out to raise awareness and encourage others to take action.
Sorijah created a series of posters to share information within the community, along with a website designed to educate and empower others. Her website explains why healthcare costs can be a barrier for many families and provides accessible tools for engagement. Visitors can find information about how to locate their elected representatives, use a ready-to-send email template to share their perspectives, and participate in a community survey.
Through her work, Sorijah demonstrates how students can take complex issues and approach them with curiosity, care, and a commitment to informed participation. Her project reflects the goals of the Changemakers initiative by encouraging thoughtful research, clear communication, and meaningful community connection.
We invite you to explore Sorijah’s website to learn more about her project and consider how you might engage with this important issue.
